The Three Gunas & Polarity Therapeutic Touch

Polarity bodywork is distinct from traditional massage or physical therapy. Rather than manually increasing blood flow by kneading soft tissue or realigning the body through mechanical methods, this approach focuses on encouraging electromagnetic energy to penetrate stagnant areas and achieve balance. This harmonization, in turn, affects one’s emotional state, physical health, and overall structure.

During a session, the client remains fully clothed and lies comfortably on a treatment table.

In Polarity therapeutic touch, three types of pressure—each named with Sanskrit terms—are used, reflecting the three gunas, or fundamental qualities of nature in Vedic philosophy. The gunas represent different states of being that influence our body, mind, and energy:

  • Sattva (Purity, Balance, Harmony) – Associated with clarity, peace, and equilibrium.

  • Rajas (Activity, Passion, Motion) – Represents movement, stimulation, and transformation.

  • Tamas (Inertia, Stability, Resistance) – Symbolizes grounding, density, and slowing down.

Each type of touch in Polarity Therapy aligns with one of these gunas, supporting balance in the body’s energy flow:

  • Sattvic Touch – A gentle, calming touch that soothes and relaxes. Do you need more calming, integration, and balancing?

  • Rajasic Touch – A more stimulating touch that gently activates energy flow. Do you need more vitality, energy, and action?

  • Tamasic Touch – A deeper pressure that helps break up energy crystallizations, allowing energy to flow through and carry away accumulated toxins. Do you need more slowing down, grounding, and embodiment?

By working with these natural energetic principles, Polarity Therapy helps bring greater harmony to both the physical and subtle body.
