The Evolutionary Approach to Astrology

Evolutionary Astrology (EA) is a relatively modern approach to astrology that emerged in the late 20th century. It is deeply rooted in spiritual and psychological traditions that view personal growth as a continuous process shaped by experience, challenges, and transformation. While astrology has long been used for psychological and spiritual insight, EA specifically explores the deeper patterns that influence an individual’s development over time, as reflected in the natal chart—particularly through the lunar nodes and Pluto.

Early Influences: Esoteric and Psychological Astrology
The philosophical roots of EA can be traced to esoteric astrology, depth psychology, and humanistic astrology, which emphasize astrology as a tool for self-awareness and personal transformation rather than mere prediction. In the early 20th century, Dane Rudhyar (1895–1985) introduced a more holistic, psychological, and spiritual approach to astrology. His work laid the foundation for viewing the natal chart as a dynamic reflection of an individual’s potential for growth and evolution rather than a fixed fate.

Rudhyar’s humanistic astrology emphasized the importance of cycles, self-actualization, and an individual’s conscious participation in their own development. He introduced the idea that planetary placements represent stages of an unfolding process, shaping a person’s journey through life. His influence can be seen in EA’s focus on planetary dynamics as catalysts for personal evolution.

Jeffrey Wolf Green & The Pluto Paradigm (1977)
The formal system of evolutionary astrology was developed and popularized by Jeffrey Wolf Green in the late 1970s. His book, Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul (1985), became foundational to the EA paradigm. Green introduced a radical perspective: that Pluto represents deep unconscious desires and the forces that drive psychological and spiritual transformation, while the lunar nodes indicate where an individual has deeply ingrained tendencies and where they are being called to grow.

While Green originally framed this within the context of past lives, his model can also be understood as a reflection of subconscious conditioning, ancestral inheritance, and the imprint of early life experiences that shape a person’s trajectory. He emphasized that every individual has free will to engage with these evolutionary lessons consciously or unconsciously.

Green's teachings became widely influential through his School of Evolutionary Astrology (Pluto School), where he trained astrologers in his method. He described EA as an astrology that "identifies the core dynamics of an individual's evolutionary growth and provides tools for conscious engagement with that process."

Steven Forrest & The Inner Sky (1984)
Around the same time, Steven Forrest developed his own approach to EA, emphasizing narrative, free will, and psychological insight rather than strict determinism. His book, The Inner Sky, published in 1984, laid the groundwork for a more accessible and psychologically rich version of EA. Forrest, like Green, focused on Pluto and the lunar nodes but framed them in terms of an individual’s evolving story, shaped by life experience, choices, and personal growth.

Forrest’s work helped make EA more widely applicable, integrating myth, storytelling, and client-centered counseling approaches. Over time, he developed a large following and has continued to teach Evolutionary Astrology worldwide through his Forrest Center for Evolutionary Astrology (FCEA).

Modern Evolutionary Astrology
In recent years, evolutionary astrology has evolved beyond its original teachings, incorporating trauma-informed perspectives and somatic awareness. Astrologers such as Jason Holley, Ian Waisler, and Virginia Rosenberg, emphasize how the nervous system, attachment patterns, and somatic memory shape an individual’s karmic and psychological evolution.

This trauma-conscious approach to astrology acknowledges that healing is not just a mental or spiritual process but a deeply embodied one. By working with subconscious imprints, ancestral inheritances, and the body's wisdom, evolutionary astrology becomes a profound method for releasing old patterns, fostering resilience, and navigating personal growth with awareness and compassion.
